Installing VPN on Your Router – First Step

If your router does not have a native VPN client, then you have to flash it with DD-WRT firmware first.

For the ones who are not familiar with what DD-WRT is, it is firmware made for wireless routers and access points.DD-WRT is required when you want to enable a VPN connection on devices that do not natively support VPN connections, such as Roku, PS4, Xbox, Chromecast, and Apple TV.

Flashing DD-WRT on your router is a simple process. It may sound challenging, but if you follow the steps below you’ll find that it’s very easy to do. Internet access should be terminated while replacing your firmware. You will be doing everything offline using a LAN connection. All you need are your PC or laptop, an Ethernet cable, and of course, your router. Once you have these on hand, follow this guide to flash DD-WRT on your router.

How to Install VPN on Your Router – Second Step

Now that you have flashed your router with DD-WRT, it’s time to set up a VPN client on it.

What we have to do is rather easy, but the step by step process has to be followed exactly. Before we start, you need to sign up with a VPN provider. Below I will be showing you how I set up ExpressVPN on my router:

  1. Your router has to have DD-WRT firmware as we mentioned above.
  2. Go to ExpressVPN’s website and sign in.
  3. Once you’re there, click the Setup ExpressVPN button.
  4. On the next page, choose Manual Config.
  5. Under Manual Configuration, click on the blue OpenVPN button.
  6. You’ll get a Username and Password. Save them, you’ll need them later.
  7. Beneath the Password field, you will find servers to pick from. Pick the country you want and click on it so that you download its VPN file.
  8. Open a new tab and access your DD-WRT router by entering its IP address, (it’s usually something like this: 192.168.x.x). This will take you to the router’s controls menu.
  9. On the Home Page, choose Services and click on VPN.
  10. Select Enable under OpenVPN Client. After that, more options will be displayed.
  11. Remember the file you downloaded, it’s time to use it. Take the server IP from the file and paste it on the page.
  12. Fill in the Username and Password you were given before.
  13. Click Save to keep the data intact.
  14. Finally, select Apply Settings to establish the VPN connection immediately. You can find it at the end of the page.Once you’re done with the steps above, click on the Status button on the Home Page to check if the connection was successful. If it is and you want to double check your new IP address, head over to What Is My IP to check for an IP change. When you go through this and everything is alright, then you’ve successfully installed a VPN on your router.
