The British Open is mere days away. Officially named the Open Championship, but often referred to as the British Open, or simply The Open, the event is the oldest of the four major championships in professional golf. First played in 1860 at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland, the British Open is the only major golf tournament that takes place outside the United States, the third major tournament of the year to be exact, wedged between the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship.
The 147th edition is set to take place from July 19 through July 22 at the Carnoustie Golf Club in Scotland. Golfers will be aiming to win their share of the 10+ million dollar prize money pool; the winner will net 1.85 million dollars.
Watch It Online
The 2018 Open Championship will be aired on Sky Sports in the UK.
NBC Sports holds the exclusive broadcasting rights in the United States. Since it’s the parent network of Golf Channel, you will also be able to catch some live action on Golf Channels’ streaming portal.
Fubo TV also bundles NBC Sports in one of its packages.
In Australia, Fox Sports will be covering The British Open this season.
So if you have a Sky Sports or NBC subscription, you’re all set to stream The Open when it kicks off… provided that you are currently in the UK or the US respectively.
Broadcasting channels have to restrict access to their channels to certain geographic areas, the UK and US in this instance. So people that happen to be traveling will not be able to use their subscription due to annoying licensing agreements… unless they have a VPN.
VPNs allow users to appear as if they are accessing a web service from a remote location. They do that by rerouting traffic through one of their servers and switching the original IP with an IP from the country in which the server is located. You can see where this is going.
So to watch Sky Sports from outside of the UK for instance, you should
- Download and install a VPN service
- Connect to a UK server
- Log on to your Sky Sports account
- Sit back and enjoy the show!
There are many VPN services to choose from, and it’s quite hard to pick. The one we recommend is ExpressVPN. In addition to circumventing geo restrictions, ExpressVPN offers military-grade encryption, apps that accommodate a very wide range of platforms, and excellent speed performance.
The Big Comeback
Need another reason to watch the British Open? None other than golfing legend Tiger Woods will be making his comeback after recovering from his latest injury. Woods returned to professional golfing in December of last year and has been gradually getting back to his level. However, when he enters the Carnoustie gates in a few days time he will find that the landscape is completely different from the last time he visited. What’s more, he is far from being the only star in town.
Don’t forget to check out our other favorite VPN services. Each of them has been thoroughly tested by our very own in-house experts.
