How to Install a VPN on Apple TV

One thing to consider is that Apple TV does not natively support VPNs. That’s why you need to install the software on your router. The good thing about this method is that you get to protect all the devices connected to the network as the VPN connection will be shared by all platforms in your house. Setting up a VPN on your router is a piece of cake whether you’re tech-savvy or new to this domain. All you have to do is:

  1. Sign up with a VPN provider, I highly recommend ExpressVPN.
  2. Follow this guide to set up your VPN on your router.
  3. Connect to a server and make sure the connection is established by checking your new IP on https://whatismyip.network/.
  4. Finally, you’ve successfully accessed a VPN connection on your Apple TV.

Choosing a reputable VPN for your Apple TV is crucial. When setting it up on a router, you’ll get to protect any internet connected devices. Not to mention that everyone at home can browse the internet without being tracked by your ISP. Kindly check this list of the best VPNs for Apple TV.

VPN Alternative – Smart DNS on Apple TV

Smart DNS is an alternative for those who got a headache while reading the instructions to install a VPN on their routers. It’s an easy process since you can configure it directly on your Apple TV. A thing to be aware of though, Smart DNS doesn’t encrypt your data or hide your IP, it just handles your URL queries, which are tied to your location. With that, you can unblock channels, stream in top speed, but with no extra protection. You can find VPN providers that offer that feature, ExpressVPN is one of them. Try it out and follow the steps below:

  1. Go to your Apple TV’s Menu>Settings.
  2. Choose “Network”.
  3. You’ll see a Wi-Fi button at the top, click on that.
  4. Select your Network.
  5. In Wi-Fi configuration, you’ll spot a configure DNS option at the bottom of the page.
  6. Choose “Manual” then enter the DNS Number you have gained from your VPN or Smart DNS provider.
  7. Restart the Apple TV.
  8. Now, you’ve set up the Smart DNS feature on your Apple TV.
